The single most useful casino tip is to know what each game costs. Every casino game has a house edge, the share of your stakes the casino keeps on average, and it ranges from under 1% (blackjack with basic strategy) to well over 10% (the Tie bet in baccarat and many side bets). Choosing games and bets with a low edge, learning the strategy where your decisions matter, and limiting how much you stake per hour will do more for your results than any system or lucky ritual. This page compares the main games, then gives practical tips for picking a casino, handling bonuses and playing slots and table games.
How to play with an online casino: tips, tricks and advice
Start with a simple rule: casino games are paid entertainment. The house edge guarantees the casino a profit over time, so the goal is to get the most enjoyment for the money you are prepared to spend, not to beat the casino. Everything below follows from that.
Compare what each game costs
| Game and bet | House edge | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Blackjack, basic strategy, good rules (3:2, dealer stands on soft 17) | Roughly 0.3% to 0.6% | Rises fast with bad rules or bad play |
| Video poker, 9/6 Jacks or Better, perfect strategy | 0.46% | 8/5 tables cost 2.70% |
| Baccarat, Banker | 1.06% | Player 1.24% |
| French roulette, even-money bets with La Partage | 1.35% | Other bets 2.70% |
| Craps, pass line | 1.41% | Lower with free odds |
| Casino Hold’em | 2.16% | Per ante |
| European roulette | 2.70% | Every bet |
| Three Card Poker, ante and play | 3.37% | Per ante |
| Online slots | Typically about 3% to 6% (RTP 94% to 97%) | Check the version’s RTP |
| American roulette | 5.26% (2 in 38) | Five-number bet 7.89% |
| Baccarat, Tie at 8:1 | 14.36% | Avoid |
| Keno | Varies widely by pay table | Land-based keno is often among the costliest games; online versions vary, so check the RTP |
The table shows why game choice matters more than luck. EUR 1,000 staked at a 0.5% blackjack table costs about EUR 5 on average; the same EUR 1,000 on a 96% slot costs about EUR 40, and on the Tie bet in baccarat about EUR 144.
Count the hourly cost, not just the edge
The real price of a session is stake x rounds per hour x house edge. A fast slot at 600 spins an hour and EUR 1 a spin puts EUR 600 through the game; at a 4% edge that averages EUR 24 an hour. A live blackjack table at EUR 5 a hand and 60 hands an hour puts EUR 300 through at around 0.5%, about EUR 1.50 an hour. Slowing down is one of the easiest ways to make a budget last.
Picking an online casino
An online casino holds your money, so choose it with the care you would give any business that does. Our checklist of what to look for in an online casino goes deeper; the short version:
- Licence on the register. Look the operator up on the regulator’s own website, not just the logo in the footer. Our safe casinos guide explains how to check the main registers.
- Withdrawal terms. Read the processing time, minimum and maximum withdrawal, and identity checks before you deposit.
- Complaint route. Good casinos name an independent dispute body.
- Game information. RTPs in the game info screens, table rules visible before you sit down.
- Safer gambling tools. Deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion should be easy to find and to set.
Our scoring method, which weighs these factors before bonuses, is published on how we rate casinos.
Gambling tips, or how to raise your chances
No tip changes the odds of a random event. These tips improve your expected result where that is possible, and protect your budget everywhere else.
Slots
- Open the info screen and check the RTP; many games exist in several versions.
- Match volatility to your budget; high-volatility games need more spins to reach a feature.
- Prefer wager-free free spins over large deposit bonuses with heavy wagering.
- Remember that progressive jackpot slots pay for the jackpot with a lower base RTP. Our free slots hub explains RTP and volatility in detail.
Blackjack
- Learn basic strategy and use a chart at the table; online it is allowed.
- Only play tables that pay 3:2 on blackjack; 6:5 adds about 1.39 percentage points to the edge.
- Decline insurance and even money.
- Keep side bets small or skip them. Our free blackjack page has the full chart.
Roulette
- Single-zero wheels only; French tables with La Partage halve the edge on even-money bets.
- No betting system changes the 2.70% edge.
- Live tables are slower than RNG tables, which lowers the hourly cost at the same stake. See our free roulette guide for every bet and payout.
Baccarat and video poker
- In baccarat, bet Banker and avoid the Tie.
- In video poker, read the pay table (9/6 Jacks or Better is the benchmark) and follow the strategy for that table.
- Play five coins in video poker at a smaller coin value rather than fewer coins.
Bonuses: do the maths first
A bonus is worth taking only if the expected cost of clearing it is smaller than the bonus. The formula is simple: wagering amount x house edge of the games you will play.
A worked example: a 100% match up to EUR 100 with 35x wagering on deposit plus bonus. Deposit EUR 100, receive EUR 100, and you must wager EUR 7,000. On slots at a 4% edge, the expected cost is EUR 280, almost three times the EUR 100 bonus. The same bonus with 10x wagering on the bonus only (EUR 1,000) costs about EUR 40 on average, so it has real value.
Check four terms every time: the wagering multiple and what it applies to, the maximum bet while the bonus is active, the time limit, and which games count. Table games often count 0% to 10%. In Great Britain, UKGC licensees must cap wagering requirements at 10 times the bonus from 19 January 2026.
Manage your bankroll
- Set the session budget first, then a stake of about 1% to 2% of it.
- Decide a stop: a loss limit and a time limit, and optionally a win target where you cash out.
- Use the casino’s tools to enforce limits rather than relying on willpower.
- Keep gambling money separate from money for bills and savings.
- Never chase losses. Raising stakes to win back money is the fastest way to turn a bad session into a serious problem.
Myths to ignore
- “A machine or table is due.” Random events have no memory.
- “Casinos tighten slots at busy times.” Certified online slots run a fixed maths model.
- “Systems beat the house.” They rearrange the edge, they do not remove it.
- “Free play is set to pay more.” Reputable studios use the same maths in demo mode.

Frequently asked questions
Which casino game has the best odds?
Blackjack played with basic strategy at a table with good rules (roughly 0.3% to 0.6% house edge) and 9/6 Jacks or Better video poker played perfectly (0.46%) are the cheapest. The Banker bet in baccarat (1.06%) comes next. Slots, keno and most side bets cost more.
How can I increase my chances of winning at a casino?
Choose low-edge games, learn the correct strategy where decisions matter (blackjack, video poker), avoid high-edge side bets, play fewer rounds per hour and skip bonuses whose wagering costs more than the bonus is worth. Nothing turns a negative game into a positive one.
Are casino betting systems worth using?
No. Martingale, Fibonacci, D’Alembert and similar systems change how your wins and losses are spread, not the house edge. Progressive systems also run into table limits and budgets during losing streaks.
How do I know an online casino is safe?
Look the licence up on the regulator’s own register, read the withdrawal terms and check how complaints are handled. A licence from a strict regulator, clear terms and a named dispute body matter more than any bonus.
Is it better to take a casino bonus or play without one?
Work out the wagering cost first: wagering amount times the house edge of the games you will play. If the cost is larger than the bonus, playing without one is better. Bonus-free play also avoids bonus wagering, the bonus maximum-bet rule and bonus-related withdrawal restrictions.
How much should I bet per spin or hand?
A common guideline is 1% to 2% of the session budget per bet, which gives you enough rounds to ride out normal swings. Set the budget first, then the stake.
